We paid EUR 430 million in fines last year
The people of Belgium paid fines worth EUR 430 million last year. Most of the money was raised in the form of traffic fines. The figure is up 50 million on the previous year.
The increase in the amount raised is being linked to more police checks and the rise in the amount that has to be paid for many fines. The collection system too is running more smoothly now.
The Belgian motoring association Touring has condemned the continual rise in the size of fines. Danny Smagghe: "We can't see any clear correlation between the size of fines, the deterrent effect and road safety."
The Flemish motoring association Touring calls for the extra cash to be spent on training young people. Maarten Matienko: "That has always received too little attention. The aim is to increase road safety, but let's start by investing in youngsters."
