A main water pipe burst on the Bergensesteenweg (Chaussée de Mons) in the Brussels district of Sint-Pieters-Leeuw. The reason the pipe burst is unknown but it likely it had something to do with the freezing cold weather we have been having over the last weeks.
The water leak caused the road to cave in. Some houses were also flooded and the inhabitants had to be evacuated.
The area affected has been closed off to traffic. The local police and fire department arrived on the scene quickly to assess the damage.
The water has been turned off so it is no longer gushing out of the pipe. The water works company are repairing the leak in the meantime.
