BRUSSELS – The government of Wallonia has injected more money into boosting its regional economy than its Flemish counterpart, according to a new survey published on Thursday night.

The study by the Union of Flemish middle classes (Unizo) found that Dutch-speaking Flanders spent less than 10 percent of its total budget on initiatives to boost employment, economic growth and training.

The percentage in French speaking Wallonia was noticeably higher, the Unizo study added.

Unizo wants the Flemish authorities to follow the Walloon example and spend more money on economic development. It is particularly keen for Flanders to give more support to the region’s small and medium-sized enterprises.

Despite Unizo’s complaints, Flanders remains more prosperous than Wallonia.
