BRUSSELS — The man who was offered up for rent on auction site eBay last week by his girlfriend was hired for just EUR 56.50 on Thursday night.

The highest bidder, going under the name constantin9519, won four hours with Denis, 28, of Jette in Brussels, newspaper 'Het Nieuwsblad' reported on Friday.

Denis' girlfriend Nadia Manfroid had offered him up for rent because she wanted a night out alone.

It started as a joke, but ended up as an unprecedented success. Widespread media attention was attracted, with Nadia and Denis even featured on BBC radio.

Some 26,000 people also viewed the offer on the internet: "An absolute record in Belgium", eBay proclaimed. The previous record was 19,000.

"The attention was really unexpected. However, both of us have enjoyed it," Manfroid said.

"But eBay had to refuse several bidders because they had a suspicious profile. Therefore, earlier higher bids had to be brought back to the final amount."

It is not yet known who Denis will spend the four hours with. "We have sent an email to the highest bidder and will make arrangements with him or her."'
