Top diamond merchants under Belgian tax-evasion gaze
Top diamond merchants in the trade hub of Antwerp are being targeted under a headline-making international journalistic probe into alleged tax havens, leading Belgian daily Le Soir reported late Thursday.
Documents produced by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists contain "more than 100 names" that have links to Hong Kong, Malay and Singaporean companies set up to avoid Belgian taxation, the newspaper said on its website.
Le Soir said some of the biggest names in the industry's trading hub, nowadays dominated by Indian merchants, are included on the list.
The daily also says that Brussels "pharmaceutical laboratories" are in investigators' sights.
Quizzed by the newspaper, the Belgian government minister responsible for tax fraud, John Crombez, said simply that the claims would be examined.
