BRUSSELS – Belgian taxpayers can look forward to very few VAT inspections, according to reports in the Flemish press.
The newspapers 'De Standaard', 'Het Volk' and 'Het Nieuwsblad' interviewed a tax office manager – who remained anonymous – who claimed he had too few staff to thoroughly check VAT contributions.
The manager said he had 47 inspectors, with just five available for VAT returns, while he should have 20 to 25.
"My control centre is responsible for 15,000 businesses and nearly as many self-employed workers, so almost 30,000 cases," he said.
"Some 5 to 600 of them are properly checked."
The desperate manager has even written to taxpayers asking them to declare income that they have omitted to include on their tax returns.
The revelations come just days after the government admitted there were mistakes on its tax website and shortly after tax advisors claimed mistakes on forms meant as many as one in 10 people in Belgium would be taxed incorrectly this year.
