BRUSSELS — The top 10 candidates in the running to be named the Greatest Belgian were revealed on Flemish television on Monday night.

Initially, the top 111 to 11 Belgians were announced before the 10 names who will contest the final were revealed.

The top ten Greatest Belgians will now fight it out in coming weeks to see which one of them is the nation's all-time greatest.

A series of programmes will be broadcast in which Belgian personalities will present their case for each candidate.

The programmes will be broadcast on Flemish public television station VRT and the winner will be announced at the start of December.

The VRT broadcast comes after similar programmes were staged in Britain and the Netherlands.

The top 10 Belgian candidates are: Father Damian (missionary in a lepers' colony), Vesalius (scientist), Ambiorix (Gaulish chieftain), Peter Paul Rubens (artist), Paul Janssens (chemist), Eddy Merckx (cyclist), Mercator (cartographer), Hendrik Conscience (Flemish author), Father Daens (priest who fought for workers' rights) and Jacques Brel (singer).
