BRUSSELS –  Flemish Culture Minister Bert Anciaux will be able to add "slightly more than" EUR 10 million to the 2008 budget for culture. The minister did not wish to state the exact amount. The Flemish Opera orchestras in particular will benefit from this. Next year the Antwerp opera theatre will re-open and then "the opera must get all the support it needs to be able to structurally go on for once and for all," said Anxiaux.

Half of the EUR 10 million is intended for direct support of individual artists. Anciaux is of the opinion that institutions and organisations have spent too much of the money they received in recent years on overheads and too little on the artists themselves. In addition, the minister wants to rid the sector of its social malpractices.
