BRUSSELS — The Belgian telecoms sector recorded solid growth in 2004, the Telecoms Advice Committee reported on Tuesday.

The committee's annual report said the mobile sector injected the most vigour into the telecoms industry.

In 2004, there was a 6 percent increase in the use of SIM cards compared with 2003. The number of text messages increased by almost 8 percent.

The number of cable and ADSL internet connections has risen sharply. ADSL recorded 28 percent growth, while cable internet rose by 37 percent.

The sector has profited by a greater diversity of services: ADSL light, the offer of various speeds and the joint packages of broadband internet with telephone services have proved popular.
