BRUSSELS — The Belgian baby that was found dead in a Barcelona hotel earlier this week was still alive at the time of its birth, an autopsy has revealed.

The baby was born to a West Flemish couple from Zwevegem who was staying in the hotel in Santa Susanna (Barcelona).

It is not yet certain how the baby died, but the autopsy has indicated it was not an abortion or miscarriage.

Both the woman and man are currently being detained in a Spanish cell and are suspected of manslaughter.

The woman claims she didn't know she was pregnant.

The couple was holidaying in Barcelona with their three other children.

Following the couple's arrest, the children were placed in the care of their grandparents who were holidaying in the south of France.
