BELGIUM – Summer sales in Belgium turned out to be a success after all with sales figures up 2.5 percent from 2007,

Businesses in Belgium are happy with the figures, although they had hoped for more, especially since sales was slow in spring.

"Summer sales have not allowed the fashion industry to make up for low sales figures in spring," said Dominique Michel of Fedis - the Federation of Belgian Distributors.

The first day of summer sale was a huge disappointment to store owners as sales were 5 percent down on last year.

Figures did not pick up until two weeks later on 15 July. Store owners started to see more people shopping and buying. The clothes and shoes sector eventually saw a 2.5 increase in turnover.
