BRUSSELS – The summer is the ideal time for many people to learn a foreign language.
Students, but also job seekers and working people, often take advantage of their time off in summer to brush up on their language skills.
The Dutch Academy in Brussels, which offers Dutch language courses, noticed an increase in the number of adults and young adults registered for courses this summer. "We offer courses on all levels," says Michel Filissiadis of the Academy.
"The enrolment numbers at language centres are linked to the state of the economy. When the economy is doing well, people are more inclined to perfect their mastery of a foreign language," Filissiadis adds.
CERAN Belgium in Spa, a luxury centre for language instruction, has also noticed that its classrooms are filled in summer time. "We are fully booked. The summer is CERAN's high season. All our available classrooms are in use," says Maïté Mignot of CERAN Belgium.
CERAN, which has mainly an international clientele, offers instruction in a number of languages. English is the most popular, followed by Dutch and French.
