BRUSSELS – Brussels local transport came to a standstill Friday when the MIVB held a 24-hour strike which closed down the entire network.

There were no trams, buses or metro services in the Belgian capital on the same day the European summit was being held in the European quarter.

Many commuters took the day off in what had been predicted as a day of traffic chaos.

MIVB management made a number of concessions in talks with unions, but these came too late in the day to avoid the strike.

Staff are unhappy with working conditions, and say they lack confidence in their management.
