BELGIUM - Fleming Stijn Devolder has won this year's Tour of Flanders cycle race. He was able to keep Nick Nuyens and Juan Antonio Flecha at bay in an exciting climax to Flanders' biggest cycling event.

The weather was better than expected at the start of the race and this inspired the peloton to set off at a high tempo.

It wasn't until the first hill climb that some of the riders were able to break away.

However, the peloton had everything under control and was able to catch the leaders again just before the Oude Kwaremont. A little further on at the Paterberg, the favourites were able to take control and Boonen pulled out in front a few kilometres later on the Koppenberg.

The others were able to keep up, except for Leif Hoste who had problems with his bike.

Devolder pushed forward between Oudenaarde and Geraardsbergen. The Belgian Champion was in front on the infamous "Geraardsbergen Wall".

Meanwhile, Hoste had made up the ground that he had lost.

Towards the end of the race, Tom Boonen played the role of the perfect team-mate by helping Devolder break away unhindered from the leading pack. Only Flecha and Nuyens were able to come anywhere close to him, but even they were unable to catch Devolder.

The Fleming was the first to cross the finishing line in Meerbeek.
German Judith Arndt (Team High Road) won the Tour of Flanders for Women.

She beat the American Kristin Armstrong to second place.
