BRUSSELS – The number of Belgians registered as organ donors has more than doubled in the past two years.

The country now has 73,000 registered donors. Two years ago that number was just 32,000. The number of organ transplants has also increased. In the first half of this year one or more organs were used from more than 170 deceased donors. That is an increase of more than 20 percent.

The positive trends are due to several campaigns to make people more sensitive to the need for donors.

Together with Spain, Belgium is on its way to leading the pack in terms of numbers of organ donations.
