BRUSSELS – Heavy snowfalls have seriously disrupted road travel and public transport in Belgium and the forecasters are predicting more snow over the weekend.

In southern Belgium the police say snow has been directly responsible for at least 20 road accidents, although none of them have caused serious injuries.

Flights in and out of Zaventem international airport near Brussels were also delayed or cancelled Thursday and many of the country’s trains have been running late.

As a preventative road safety measure, the French authorities on Wednesday night stopped heavy goods vehicles crossing from Belgium into France. The temporary ban was lifted on Thursday morning.

Weather forecasters predicted further snowfalls on Friday and Saturday.
