BRUSSELS — According to the most pessimistic weather forecasts, heavy snowfalls could start in Belgium at about midday on Friday.

"The German weather forecast predicts 20cm of snow, or even more," Pieter De Brakeleer, a meteorologist with Belgian weather bureau RMI, said.

The snowfalls are forecast to be spread nation-wide, news agency Belga reported.

However, British and US weather forecasts are predicting light snowfalls in the north and centre of the country and five to 15cm in southern Belgium.

The possible snowfalls are due to a low pressure system above the north-west of France that is moving towards Germany.

French weather models are forecasting five to 10cm of snow in central Belgium and perhaps 10 to 20cm in southern Belgium.

However, according to all weather forecasts, it will start snowing in Belgium at about midday on Friday.

"Snow will also fall during the weekend and until the middle of next week it will remain colder than normal for this time of the year," Belgian weatherman Eddy De Mey said.
