Smog alert again in Belgium

Speed reductions will come into effect in Brussels.

According to the Inter-regional Environment Department IRCEL the concentrations of particulate matter measured in the air are again too high. A speed-limit of 90 km/hr on most motorways and orbitals in the country should help. Speed reductions will also come into effect in Brussels.

"Tomorrow we expect the situation to be worse, surpassing the alert level of 70 micrograms per cubic metre," says Frans Fierens of IRCEL.

The experts expect air pollution to be more serious than during the last smog alert.  The alert will come into effect from 6 a.m. on Friday morning. It will continue through Saturday at least.

In Brussels, where the speed limit is normally 70 kmhour, during the smog alarm the speed limit will be 50 km/hour.

This is a new measure which is being implemented during smog alerts. The measure was introduced on January 1. The police will operate extra speed controls.

The last smog alert was during the New Year's holiday. The speed restrictions were applied for 4 days.
