Sixteen Belgians stranded on La Palma

Two forest fires are still raging out of control on La Palma in the Canary Islands.

Many tourists are unable to return home as a result of the fires. Between 1,500 and 2,000 hectares of forest have been destroyed in the fires so far, and around 4,000 people have been evacuated from villages bordering the stricken area. Lots of tourists are unable even to leave their hotels.

A spokesman for the tour operator Jetair told the Flemish Radio and Television Network (VRT) that the sixteen Belgians trapped on the island will not be able to return home before today at the earliest.

"We are following the situation from hour to hour.”

"However, as it is such as busy weekend, in the middle of the high season, there aren’t any seats available on flights."
