BRUSSELS – The number of shoplifting incidents rose by just under 11 percent last year, according to Léon Wegnez in Distribution Today, the trade journal for shop owners.

The Prevention and Security Organisation counted 22,557 incidents of shoplifting last year, compared to 20,333 the year before. That is an increase of almost 11 percent. The actual number of thefts is much higher because not all shops are members of this organisation.

The figures from Prevention and Security show that the value of the damage suffered by their members rose by no less than 35 percent. Shoplifting seems to be primarily a Walloon problem: 43 percent of these incidents took place in Wallonia. 30 percent took place in Brussels and 27 percent in Flanders.
