BRUSSELS — The number of requests for asylum lodged with Belgian authorities continues to fall.
Interior Ministry figures reveal just 870 people lodged a request for asylum in Belgium last month, the lowest figure since 1997.
The first three months of this year also show a decline in the number of asylum seekers, newspaper 'De Tijd' reported on Monday.
If that trend continues, less than 12,000 requests for asylum will be lodged in Belgium this year.
In 2000, some 42,000 requests for asylum were recorded.
The number of requests has hovered between 15,000 and 17,000 in the past three years.
Those figures, however, still placed Belgium in the top 10 most attractive countries for asylum seekers.
