BELGIUM – A new Tintin book has been withdrawn from the shelves as it portrays the journalist as someone with an active sex life.
Moulinsart, the association holding the rights on the works of Belgian comic strip author Hergé, has decided to withdraw the book “Tintin and the Pink Lotus”.
The Pink Lotus was written by the Spanish author Antonio Altarriba, a professor in French literature. The work was meant as a tribute to the late Belgian comic strip author Hergé, the pen name of Georges Remi.
The album is based on Hergé's "The Blue Lotus" and depicts Tintin as a tabloid journalist in his thirties having a midlife crisis. In the book, Tintin is seen having affairs with different women. Graphic sexual scenes can also be found in Altarriba’s book.
Moulinsart is not amused with the album, claiming that "The Pink Lotus" can hardly be called a parody.
"We always look at things case by case, and this book does not meet the standards to be called a parody. The essence of the personality of Tintin has been perverted."
