BRUSSELS – Seven officials of the Road and Transport administration, department Oost-Vlanderen, and four contractors are being prosecuted by the court in Ghent for serious environmental violations.

The defendants apparently allowed illegal dumping sites to be created in various places around Ghent for depositing waste from road works.

These waste products – remnants of asphalt, sewage sludge, contaminated soil and concrete rubble – should have been carefully processed and disposed of. But everything was dumped in huge heaps in Zelzate, De Pinte, Wetteren and other places.

These "temporary" dumps were then forgotten. This kind of dumping can damage human health and the environment.
