BRUSSELS - Some 20 officers of the federal and local police corps have been going through the closed centre for illegal immigrants in Merksplas (province of Antwerp) looking for drugs and arms.

During the space of just one month, 2 attempts to escape the closed deportation centre in Merksplas have been frustrated. Last week the police found home-made weapons. The personnel were uneasy and feared for their safety. They even feared a hostage-taking situation.

The guards who are members of the socialist trade union are threatening with strike action if security measures are not taken quickly.

Merksplas is a closed centre for illegal immigrants who are awaiting extradition.
