BRUSSELS – Hundreds of police from four western European nations detained 83 people in possession of drugs in a major operation over the weekend, Belgium's federal police said in a statement Sunday.

The operation - dubbed Star and aimed at cracking down on drug tourism - saw police in Belgium, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands seize quantities of marijuana, heroin, cocaine, hallucinogenic mushrooms and 17 illegal weapons.

Twenty-six of those detained were put into the hands of prosecutors.

Twelve illegal immigrants and a middle-man were also picked up.

Some 260 Belgian officers were involved in the operation Friday and Saturday that saw controls on highways and back roads, trains, bus services and in areas where police believe drugs are being sold illegally, the statement said.
