BRUSSELS — Armed robbers staged a hold-up at post office in a Rocourt shopping centre on Monday, kidnapping also the clerk and her husband.
Several masked robbers forced entry into the home of the victims at about 8am. The clerk and her husband were bound and left behind under the guard of one or two robbers.
The others than drove the victims' car to the post office in Rocourt, near Liège. They showed the hostage's ID card to her colleagues and demanded cash, threatening to kill the clerk and her husband if their demands were not met.
Post office staff then gave the robbers the money from the cash registers and the robbers also tried to open the vault.
However, they abandoned the task when they discovered a timing mechanism would prevent the opening of the vault for 15 minutes, newspaper 'Het Nieuwsblad' reported.
It is not yet known how much money the bandits escaped with.
The robbers then escaped in the hostages' car and the kidnapped couple were freed a short while later. It is not yet clear how the hostages were freed.
In the vicinity of the post office, police found a suspicious package and sealed off the area. The bomb disposal squad was called in to examine the package.
However, the package appeared to be a smoke bomb after it was detonated under controlled circumstances.
Police said it is almost certain the device was placed in a garbage bag in the shopping centre by the two men who stormed into the post office.
