ELSENE – A street sweeper was arrested on Thursday after luring ten preschool children away from a public school in Elsene. He walked the children to a supermarket, bought them candy, and returned them to the school 20 minutes later.

The man has reportedly been in trouble with the law before for sex offences. He had been hired by the environmental service of Elsene municipality as part of a special arrangement. The newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws reported this on Friday.

The kindergarten teacher responsible for the children did not notice their absence. School principal Pascal Borms is not at all happy about the lack of professionalism among his staff and is starting a disciplinary investigation. The parents of the 3 and 4-year-olds have filed a complaint against the street sweeper.

The man was arrested on suspicion of "abducting minors under the age of 12." He spent the night in prison on Thursday and will be arraigned in Brussels on Friday.
