Refuse piles up in Antwerp
Uncollected refuse bags are piling up in countless streets in the northern port city of Antwerp after refuse workers went on strike on Wednesday.
The May Day bank holiday stopped any clear-up on Thursday and when the city authorities tried to stage a refuse round on Friday twenty refuse workers reported in ill or requested leave.
City cabinet member Philip Heylen claims Antwerp is being held hostage.
In all seven collection rounds have been missed.
Mr Heylen did pile praise on the refuse workers who did turn up on Friday, set to work early and worked later than usual: "They did all they could to clear as much refuse as possible."
