BRUSSELS - The Belgian Red Devils were anything but feisty in their second to last European Championship match against Poland. With lots of defensive blunders the Red Devils lost to Poland 2-0.

Euzebiusz Smolarek was the man of the match, scoring the 2 goals for Poland. He was right on target in the 44th and the 49th minutes in front of a jubilant crowd in the Slaski stadium in the industrial city of Chorzow in Poland.

Poland qualified for the European Championship finals for the first time ever. "We have made history," said Smolarek after taking his tally to nine goals in the Group A qualifying campaign.

Leaders Poland have 27 points from 13 games while Belgium are out of contention for a place in the finals with 15 points.

Poland broke the deadlock just before halftime when a misdirected pass by Belgium's Jan Vertonghen to keeper Stijn Stijnen was intercepted by Smolarek, who tapped the ball home.

Smolarek added his second goal just four minutes into the second half, sending a lob over Stijnen and into the net.

Dutchman Leo Beenhakker, who took over as Poland coach just over a year ago, had mixed emotions after the game," I am very happy with the result although I cannot be satisfied with the match itself," he said referring to the amount of chances his side missed. But the most important thing is we have reached the finals."

Poland captain Maciej Zurawski told Polish state television: "We've got a developing squad that knows how to win and the credit goes largely to the coach but also to the players." "I feel great satisfaction today. And we are going to Serbia to put up a good fight, as in every match," he said of next Wednesday's final qualifier.

The Belgians' Euro 2008 ambition was over after the national team failed to win their European Championships qualifier against Finland in Brussels on 13 October.
