BRUSSELS – A new record in the number of stadium bans issued has been reached this year in Belgium. 1,073 troublemakers have already been banned from their club's stadium this year so far. This has emerged from figures from the Football Unit of the Home Affairs Ministry reported in newspaper De Morgen on Tuesday.

997 stadium bans were issued in 2006. Another 183 hooligans evaded a ban; only 115 have managed to do so this year. This year will most likely also see a record in the total amount of fines collected for misbehaviour at matches. EUR 485,000 in fines has been imposed this year already; this is twice as much as the amount collected in 2005. Fines reached a total of EUR 493,000 in 2006.

Jo Vanhecke of the Football Unit says the figures do not indicate an increase in hooliganism, on the contrary: "The figures primarily make it clear that the football law is being applied more strictly and broadly."
