BRUSSELS – Police were called into the prison where serial killer Marc Dutroux is being held after a rebellion broke out on Friday morning.

At around 11.45am, around 50 inmates at Ittre prison, some carrying metal bars, refused to return to their cells after their morning walk.

The prison management called in officers from Tubize police.

A further 20 police officers were also scrambled from other forces in Brabant Wallon and a police helicopter and an ambulance were also called to be on standby.

The cause of the rebellion is still unknown.

It’s the first time the prison, which opened in 2002, has seen a disturbance on this scale.
