BRUSSELS – The Independent Union of Rail Personnel (OVS) on Thursday announced a series of rail strikes for December if no real solution for the train drivers is found.

The OVS's main demand is that transport company NMBS hire more engineers. The pressing shortage is currently resulting in heavy workloads and stress.

The OVS is also demanding that the profession of train driver be upgraded and granted a higher salary. "The most recent changes to the salary scales took place more than 10 years ago," the union says.

The first strike is planned for 8 December. Actions are also planned for 15, 22 and 29 December. The union of rail workers also want to call 24-hour strikes with effect from Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.
