BRUSSELS — Some 80 federal and local police officers raided 27 locations in West and East Flanders and Brabant on Tuesday in an operation against the illegal hormone trade.

Six vets and an unknown number of farmers were taken into custody for questioning, newspaper 'De Tijd' reported.

The operation was co-ordinated by the Kortrijk judiciary and the city's public prosecutor said investigations are focusing on six vets from Roeselare.

The vets are accused of supplying medicines and hormones to farmers first without examining the animals or giving diagnoses.

The farmers often allegedly placed their orders over the telephone.

According to the public prosecutor, such actions are in breach of laws regulating the supply of medicines and hormones.
