BRUSSELS — Queen Paola left the Saint Jan Hospital in Brussels at about 1pm on Tuesday after breaking her arm late last week.
The Belgian Queen fell awkwardly while holidaying in Sicily last Friday and broke her right shoulder and wrist. She spent four days in hospital.
Queen Paola had flown back to Belgium with King Albert II soon after her accident.
A minor surgical procedure was necessary to repair her broken wrist and the Queen underwent surgery on Saturday. The operation was a success.
Paola left the hospital on Tuesday in car parked at the emergency department. King Albert was also in the vehicle.
As she left the hospital, a visibly tired Queen Paola waved to the large media contingent gathered outside the building.
Besides several hospital staff who were aware that the Queen was being discharged and several passersby, no members of the public were sighted.
The King and Queen hope to continue their traditional Mediterranean yachting holiday in a few days time.
However, Queen Paola will still need to take a couple of weeks rest.
