Public transport strike paralyses Brussels

Public transport ground to a standstill in Brussels on Tuesday as tram and bus drivers joined a strike on the underground rail system called after a driver was beaten up by a passenger.

Not a single vehicle run by the STIB public transport authority was running in the morning and talks were set with trade unions later in the day following demands by drivers to step up security, the STIB said.

The shutdown followed an incident on Monday evening when a passenger attacked a train driver, breaking his arm. A security guard was also hurt.

After several such attacks in recent months, unions are demanding extra guards.
