BRUSSELS – An estimated 400,000 Belgians currently live below the poverty line and their numbers are on the increase for the first time in recent years, according to a report by Antwerp University.

This year has also seen an increase in the numbers of people claiming social security benefits although this matched a recent change in the law allowing more people to qualify for payments, the report said.

Married partners in financial diffculty can now both claim for benefit payments, as opposed to the previous system of a one-off adult payment per household.

Despite this reform, the survey noted that overall public spending to correct poverty in Belgium was less than in previous years.

The researchers warned that worsening unemployment in the country and gloomy economic forecasts suggested the poverty belt was likely to increase among Belgium's 10.3 million population.
