LIEGE - The bodies of two young girls were found on Wednesday in Liège. They were later confirmed as missing step-sisters Stacy Lemmens and Nathalie Mahy.

The first body, which is thought to have been found under a sewer cap next to a railway line near Rue Vivegnis station, was confirmed as that of seven-year-old Stacy, who disappeared along with her 10-year-old step-sister, Nathalie, during a street party in Liège on the night of 9 June.

Police continued their search in the vicinity and a second body was found at around 3pm, which police later confirmed as being Nathalie's.

The chief suspect in the abduction case of the two girls, Abdallah Ait Oud, is currently in police custody awaiting a decision from the criminal court.

The Liège court was to rule on Tuesday whether the 39-year-old should be released. This did not occur and Ait Oud remains in custody, although the discovery of the two girls' bodies is not thought to be the result of any information offered by the suspect.

Detectives had launched a fresh search this morning for the two missing step-sisters after searching the Intradel rubbish tip at Herstal again on Monday for traces of the girls.

Clothing was found at the tip on Friday and Saturday which were examined by forensics. The area had already been searched by police but there was considerable undergrowth along the line. This was cut back and a second search of the area undertaken.
