BRUSSELS – The Belgian federal police are going to work together with their Albanian colleagues. An action plan to this effect was signed on Friday, the federal police report.

The action plan is based on a police cooperation treaty between Belgium and Albania.

A number of police visits between the countries are planned for this autumn. A meeting of Belgian and Albanian experts are scheduled to meet soon in Albania to discuss measures to combat forged identification and travel documents.

Albanian detectives will visit Belgium in December as well to see how the federal police tackle economic and financial crimes (money laundering, for instance).

The federal police have had a liaison officer in the Albanian capital of Tirana since spring 2006. The exchange of information has improved significantly since then. In addition to faster exchange of information, the cooperation will also lead to technical and scientific support and training.

The action plan expires on 31 December 2007. An evaluation of the cooperation will be drawn up at that point.
