Police arrest 54 in Belgium-based drugs sweep
Hundreds of police arrested 54 people and seized cocaine, cannabis and other drugs in checks of border road and rail routes linking Belgium with neighbouring countries, authorities said Monday.
Belgian police said 1,260 vehicles, 31 trains and 1,387 people were spot-checked on main routes connecting Belgium to neighbouring France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands between Thursday and Sunday.
They said 215 people had been found in possession of drugs and 15 were caught while driving under the influence of drugs.
An Albanian was arrested on a Belgian train in possession of 1.6 kilos of cocaine. Other finds included more than 5.5 kilos of marijuana, 600 grammes of heroin as well as knives and baseball bats.
A total of 447 police and customs agents took part in the checks across the four countries.
