Peeters prepared to take on 1 111 internships
The 30 quick-win proposals to increase job creation that Flemish trade unions submitted to minister-president Kris Peeters yesterday focus mostly on employment measures, part-time vocational training and internships both in the private sector and within government. “Last month 47 000 Flemish job seekers were under the age of 25. That is 11% up from a year ago. At this stage they make up 20% of the total unemployment in Flanders. Unemployment among the youth is therefore a tangible problem. I am prepared to engage in dialogue with the social partners to investigate how the Flemish civil service could take over a percentage of school leaving trainees in the under-25 group,” said Peeters in response to one of the proposals to tackle youth unemployment. The unions believe the Flemish public services should take over 1 111 of the trainees under 25 they expect businesses to create. Peeters’ response to the remaining 29 proposals has been relatively positive as well and he even indicated that some are in the process of being carried out.
