BRUSSELS —  The victims assistance commission has decided to award both parents of An Marchal — who was killed by Marc Dutroux — the maximum compensation of EUR 62,000.

The grandparents of An will be awarded EUR 12,500 each and the brothers and sister will each receive EUR 25,000, newspaper 'Het Laatste Nieuws' reported.

The family lodged an application with the commission because Dutroux was unable to pay the compensation awarded by the Aarlen Court.

The Belgian paedophile was eventually found guilty of abduction, rape and murder on 17 June 2004.

He was convicted of leading a gang that kidnapped and raped six girls in the mid-1990s, leading to the deaths of four of them.

Dutroux lodged an appeal against his life sentence, but this was dismissed on 16 December last year.

Belgium's Supreme Court also threw out an appeal by Martin against her 30-year sentence for kidnapping and rape.
