BRUSSELS – Congo-born singer Papa Wemba has formally been charged with people smuggling, the Belgian authorities have confirmed.
The Brussels public prosecutor's office said on Thursday that the singer, who’s real name is Jules Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba, is suspected of smuggling illegal immigrants into both Belgium and France under cover of his musical activities.
Papa Wemba was questioned on Thursday before being released on bail, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office says.
He must remain available to the Belgian police and prosecutors for at least another eight days, she added.
Papa Wemba also faces people trafficking charges in France, where investigators believe he smuggled around 150 nationals from his native Democratic Republic of Congo into the country, pocketing around EUR 3,500 per person.
The singer arrived in Belgium on Tuesday (18 February) after being extradited from France.
