FLANDERS - Oud-Rekem has been chosen the most beautiful village in Flanders in a competition that aims to promote the hidden secrets of the Flemish countryside.

The runners-up in the competition were De Haan in West Flanders, Deurle in East Flanders, Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Lombeek in Flemish Brabant and Antwerp’s Kasterlee.

More than 91,000 people voted during the final round of the competition. Over a third of the votes went to Oud-Rekem. The prize is a big village party, which is taking place on Thursday.

The prize is the result of six months of intensive lobby work. The Limburg village had gone all out for the competition, organising many events and campaigns.

"I am proud of the people who voted for Oud-Rekem," said Mayor Guido Willen, adding, "Oud-Rekem deserves the honour- it IS a very beautiful village."

According to Flemish Minister of Tourism Geert Bourgeois, the impact of this competition is considerable.

"The many beautiful Flemish villages are a definitely a touristy plus-point that we should emphasise more. The competition will certainly encourage many people to visit the villages that were in the running.”

The competition was organised by Toerisme Vlaanderen together with Radio 2 of the public broadcaster VRT and the daily Het Nieuwsblad.
