No Olympic medal for Belgium yet
Plagued by an arm injury, judoka Ikse Heylen failed to win a medal on Sunday.11 August 2008
BEIJING - Belgium has yet to clinch an Olympic medal on Sunday as judoka Ilse Heylen, a serious candidate for a medal, left the Games empty-handed.
Ilse Heylen took the bronze at the previous Summer Games in Athens.
Competing in the women's 52 kg division, Heylen took an excellent start but she was stopped by Misato Nakamura. The Japanese judoka won on the lowest score, a koka.
Heylen still had a chance to take the bronze in the repechage competition, but in the repechage final, she was defeated by a Kazakh opponent, eventually taking 7th place.
Heylen has been nursing an arm injury through the whole tournament.
"My arm weighs like 100 kilograms now", she said afterwards.
"Under normal circumstances, I would have beaten my Kazakh opponent. And I also had a look at the fight against Nakamura: I couldn't see anything that would give her a point."
Belgium pins hope on young talents
Young Belgian swimmer Elise Mathyssen set a new Belgian record in the 100 metres breaststroke, reaching the semi-finals. The 16-year-old is considered as the biggest Belgian swimming talent in years, but these Olympics came just a bit too early for her.
Belgium also has a finalist in gymnastics. 16-year-old Gaëlle Mys surprised both her supporters and herself and made it to the last 24 in the all-round competition.
