No Flemish arms to Syria at this stage
Flemish minister-president Kris Peeters CD&V has decided to add Syria to its list of Middle Eastern countries to which arms export permits have been put on hold. In this way export of arms from Flanders has become impossible. The European Union has maintained an embargo for the export of arms to Syria for several years, but this has recently been lifted. Peeters however prefers to maintain the status quo against the country in view of the current violent situation in the country. Flemish politicians are divided about the embargo. EU parliamentarian Guy Verhofstadt Open VLD showed relief that the embargo will make it possible for opponents of the Syrian government to buy arms from Europe, but N-VA and Groen have demanded “a powerful signal” from the Flemish government to maintain the embargo and Peeters shares their point of view. The N-VA party is a member of the current Flemish government, whereas Open VLD and Groen are opposition parties.
