The Provincial Disaster Plan had to be implemented on Sunday after fire broke out at the La Lorraine bakery in Ninove (East Flanders). The blaze started following a leak of oil in one of the ovens.

The bakery has been gutted. Damage is estimated at many millions of euros.

Twenty-five people were in the plant when fire broke out, but nobody is hurt.

The fire soon spread to four of the bakery's ovens. Fire-fighters had a hard time gaining control of the blaze.

Ninove fire-fighters received assistance from colleagues as far a field as Denderleeuw, Wetteren and Aalst.

By Sunday morning fire-fighters had gained control of the blaze.

The provincial disaster plan was implemented because of the danger of ammonia ending up in the atmosphere.

500 local residents were evacuated. Rail services between Ninove and Geraardsbergen have been suspended.

Employees at La Loraine will now have to sign on. The bakery employs a workforce of 400.

The bakery produces bread for chains including Delhaize and Panos, but the company believes production can be switched to other plants.
