BRUSSELS - Night flight paths to and from Brussels' Zaventem airport are to be spread more evenly above the capital's suburbs, Belgian Transport Minister Bert Anciaux announced Wednesday.

Anciaux warned however the changes to the flight paths could not be implemented immediately, and would be introduced gradually.

The chnages were forced on the minister after Belgium's Court of Appeal gave the government a deadline to distribute the flight paths over a wider area, failing which it faces fines of EUR 50,000 per day.

The problem of noise nuisance caused by the night flights has been the subject of months of protests by associations representing residents in the northern suburbs of the capital, the area worst affected.

The appeals court gave its ultimatum after ruling in favour of a second suit brought against the government by residents' groups.
