BRUSSELS – Detectives are reportedly following a new trail in the investigation into the murder of 18-year-old Annick Van Uytsel from Diest, a trail that could lead to the possible murderer, VRT reported on its radio news journal today at noon. Jef Vermassen, the lawyer representing the Van Uytsel family, was quoted in the news report.

On Wednesday the Van Uytsel family was given access to the file on Annick's murder for the first time, and that apparently indicated that the investigation is anything but deadlocked.

Vermassen says there is even a new trail being followed up on, and a breakthrough could be imminent. The lawyer did not want to comment further on what kind of trail this might be. The public prosecution department in Leuven is withholding from any comment at the moment.
