BELGIUM - The United States have announced a new internet travel authorisation scheme for tourists travelling to the US for no longer than three months.

At a new briefing in Brussels on Monday, Jackie Bednarz, attache for the US Department of Homeland Security, said the ESTA internet system (Electronic System for Travel Organisation) will allow travellers to check if they need a visa to travel to the states.

Currently, tourists travelling to the US have to fill in green documents on the aeroplane before entering the US. However there are times when tourists may be denied entry because of visa problems.

With the implementation of the ESTA internet system, airlines would not be able to sell tickets to people who cannot give their ESTA number.

The system will be online as from Friday. It will come into force as of January 2009.
