BELGIUM - As has become tradition at the beginning of a new month, new rules and regulations are introduced. April brings good tidings to users of premium rate telephone services, owners of company cars and self-employed parents.

As of Tuesday, maximum rates apply to premium rate numbers. Callers to numbers starting in 0905 will now be charged a maximum of EUR 2 per call. In a further attempt to protect consumers; calls to premium rate numbers will automatically be terminated after 10 minutes.

Also from Tuesday the degree in which company cars are tax deductible will depend on the level of CO2 emissions. The more polluting the car, the less tax deductible it will be.

Cars that pollute most will only be tax deductible to the tune of 60 percent. Cars that pollute least will be 90 percent tax deductible. That’s 15 percent more than currently applies.

Finally, self-employed parents will see the child benefits for their first-born child go up by EUR 10. The new measure should reduce the gap with the employees. The latter currently get EUR 80 a month for their first-born child, compared to EUR 71 for the self-employed.
